William H. "Bill" Gardner, 87, of Dunbar, died peacefully Saturday March 2, 2013 at Hubbard House West in South Charleston. He is survived by daughters, Pam Steelhammer of Cross Lanes, and Sandi Gardner-Wood of Denver, Colorado, grandchildren Nicholas Gardner "Nick" Steelhammer and Chelsea Ann Steelhammer, and sons-in law, Rick Steelhammer and Joseph Wood. He was preceded in death by Mary Lou Cottrill Gardner, his wife of 61 years, and his grandson, Cody Steelhammer. Bill grew up in North Charleston. He retired from Rhone-Poulenc (formerly Union Carbide) in Institute where he was a pipefitter for over 37 years. He spent the last five months of his life at Sweetbrier Sweet Memories, in Dunbar where he was cared for with the love and compassion he deserved. He was a man of steadfast faith and attended the Charleston Mountain Mission for nearly five decades. He taught Sunday school and served as an usher. In a culture which too often tends toward religious ethnocentricity he was unusual in that he was accepting and nonjudgmental of people who saw the world differently from him. He often commented the world would be a boring place if everyone thought the same. His faith was evident not only in his words, but in his loving and considerate actions. He saw the best in people and taught his family to do the same. He loved solving problems and puzzles and could fix or build just about anything. He lived in a state of gratitude for the blessings he had and inspired others to do the same. He had a marvelous sense of humor, was a natural storyteller. He delighted his grandchildren with adventures of the imagination which sparked their creativity. When he smiled, which he often did, even his eyes reflected his joy. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday March 6, 2013 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Price officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cody Steelhammer Project HOPE fund.
