Vernice Starkey Lowe, 92, of Charleston was promoted to glory at 12:25 PM, Sunday, June 3, 2012. All four of her children were present as she made her departure. Vernice was born in Clarksburg, WV on May 11, 1920 to Hugh Vernon Starkey and Hazel Beaver Starkey. She moved to the Southwest and spent her early years there; first in Oklahoma, then residing in Texas. Vernice moved back to West Virginia at the age of 16. She graduated from Charleston High School in 1938 and married Charles Albert Lowe on November 30, 1940. Vernice worked for United Fuel Gas Company until moving briefly to Florida while Albert was in the Navy, where she worked for the Navy in payroll. When the war was over they moved back to Charleston, WV. She worked for 20 years for Kanawha Block Company before moving to Columbus for several years. She also worked for 20 years for H&R Block Company. Vernice moved back to Charleston, WV in 1987 where she spent the remainder of her years. She has also been a faithful member of Maranantha Baptist Church, near Sissonville, for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Hazel Starkey; and husband, Charles Albert Lowe. Surviving are her four children, Joyce Lowe Jett and her husband, Robert of NC, Charles Albert Lowe, II and his wife, Linda of SC, Loretta Lowe Hopson of WV and Janet Lowe Cosgrove and her husband, Robert of OH; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and sister Betty Stevens of OK. Also surviving her are several "adopted" grandchildren and many others that call her Maw Maw; as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Maranantha Baptist Church, One Maranantha Acres, Charleston, WV 25312, with Pastors Bill Bartlett and Kevan Bartlett officiating. Burial will be in the Lowe Cemetery, Elkview. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 6-8 PM also at the church.
