IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Shirley Marie
Toler
April 21, 1945 – February 9, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Shirley Marie Toler, 78, on February 9, 2024.
Born in Charleston, WV on April 21, 1945, she was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, and Friend. She enjoyed 53 loving years with husband, James E. Toler, "Jim" before he left this world in 2016. Shirley was a devout member of Keystone Apostolic Church, where her faith guided her every action. She served the congregation, wearing multiple hats over the years as a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Leader, and church Secretary. Her commitment to her church family was unwavering, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Her impact extended far beyond the church walls. For many years, Shirley devoted herself to Conquerors Christian School, where she served as Administrator. Through her dedicated service, she touched the lives of countless children, leaving an indelible mark of love and guidance upon each one.
Professionally, Shirley was an employee of Verizon (formerly C&P Telephone, now Frontier), dedicating over 30 years to the company. Her hard work and integrity were evident throughout her tenure, earning her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. After retiring, she generously contributed her time and expertise to the Cha-Tel Federal Credit Union, serving as Chair of the Supervisory Committee. Above all else, Shirley will be remembered for her kind, giving spirit and positive outlook. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her tender heart touched the lives of all
who crossed her path. Whether through a comforting word or Hallmark card, a helping hand, or a selfless act of kindness, she made the world a brighter place for everyone she encountered.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Earl and Virginia Marie (Westfall) Butler; her husband, James E. Toler; and sister, Judy Butler.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Michele Smith, husband Isaac, and Jamelle Anderson, husband Michael; sisters, Carolyn Ford and Robin Haynes, husband Tim; grandchildren, Ashley Carter, husband Jermaine, Kathleen and Megan Anderson, Joshua Bailey, Tehya and Aaliyha Smith; and great grandchildren, Jermaine, Jr., Jacob, James, and Takiyah. Her nieces and nephews are too numerous to name but she loved and cherished each one.
A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at North Charleston Apostolic Church, 2408 6th Avenue, Charleston. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM, followed by Funeral services at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024 with Pastor James Chessor officiating. A private graveside service will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the life that awaits her beyond. May her memory be a blessing and inspire each of us to honor her legacy each day by spreading love, kindness, and generosity in the world, just as she did.
