Shirley Givens, 89, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on December 26, 2011. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII upon the last surviving Pearl Harbor Ship, Cutter Taney, still afloat and part of the Baltimore Maritime Museum. After his military service, he worked as a plumber, and later retired from True Temper Corporation as a pipe fitter. Shirley was a Christian and a member of the Charleston Mountain Church. He lived most of his life in Charleston, where he enjoyed helping people. He treasured each of his friendships, including those from Suzie's Hamburgers in North Charleston. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Betty Pennington Givens; daughter, Sherry Givens; mother, Minnie Gandee Givens and father Lanty Givens; brother, John O. Givens. Surviving him is brother, Ronald Givens of Charleston; son, Bill Givens and his wife Carma of Dunbar; daughter, Deborah Stowers and her husband Randall of Charleston; Grandsons, Scott Givens, of Charleston; Chris Stowers and his wife Elizabeth of Lester; Brian Givens of Charleston; Justin Slater and his wife Kelly of Sandusky Ohio. Great Grandchildren, Kaitlyn Stowers, Summer Givens, Hunter Stowers, Sydney Givens, Savannah Stowers, Autumn Givens and Emily Givens. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Charleston Mountain Mission Church with the Rev. Fairley McCormick and the Rev. Tom Price officiating. Burial will follow at Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty, WV. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home and one hour prior to service at the Church.
