Sam "Bunkie" Talbert 84 of Charleston passed away April 2, 2016 with his family by his side. Sam was drafted in 1952 to the US Army at 20 years of age. Following basic training he served 12 months in Korea with the 17th Inf. Reg 7th Div. In late 1953 General Trudeau presented Corporal Talbert with the Silver Star for Gallantry while at war. He is also credited a Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, 2 battle Stars, Good conduct Medal and many Standard awards for Foreign Service. Sam was known as being a hero who fought one of the deadliest battles known as "Pork Chop Hill." He lead his squad into a strategic enemy held artillery barrage and took back The US Army position by providing cover fire. Talbert himself is credited with killing over 200 enemy troops. After his years in the military he retired from Cook Motor Lines with more than 30 years of service. He was also a charter and lifetime member of The Teamsters Local, number 0061. He was preceded in death by his parents Alpha and Sam Talbert, Sr. His memory will be cherished by his devoted son Greg Talbert and wife Joyce; daughter Tonyia; grandchildren, Tiffany, Travis, Dustin, Megan, Jennifer and Jason; great grandchildren, Shalya and Brooklyn and many brothers, sister, nieces and nephews who are also left to mourn his passing. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday April 6, 2016 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with Pastor Wesley Holden officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
