Obituary

Robert Lee Martin, Sr., 67, of Charleston passed away peacefully on Saturday July 3, 2010, with the family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a retired heavy-equipment operator with Blackrock, Inc., as a diesel mechanic with Western Branch Diesel. He was one the top gasoline mechanics this side of the Mississippi. When one of his friends or family needed repairs to their vehicle, they would call on Bob for his expertise. Bob and his father, Carl, were once ambulance drivers for Cunningham Funeral Home back in the 60's. He was the former Owner/Operator of Quality Service Center. Bob was preceded in death by his loving parents, Carl and Nellie Martin; his father-in-law, SGM Robert Dawson; and his nephew Bobby Copley. He leaves to cherish his memory, his four children, R.J. Martin, son and best friend of Charleston; "Bobby" Martin, Jr., of Cross Lanes; daughter, Michelle Harmon of Charleston; Mark Wells of North Carolina. Grandchildren, Anthony and Rusty Lee Harmon both of Charleston; Ashley Martin of Cross Lanes; Jaylee Barlow of Charleston; Stephen Wells, Erica Beasley; and great-granddaughter, Emma Beasley, all of North Carolina. Also surviving him are, Sonja White, his girlfriend; and former wife and mother of his son, R.J., Sharon Martin Copley. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday July 7, 2010 at the Funeral Home. A Funeral Service to celebrate Bob's life will be held 11:00AM Thursday July 8, 2010 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home in Charleston, with Pastor Anthony Moss and Pastor Matt Shamblin officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Rites provided by American Legion Post, 61, Clendenin, will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico. The family wishes to express their sincere thank you to Sonja White for all the time and care she gave to Bob.
