Richard G. Walker affectionately known to family and friends as "Punkin" or "Punky" went home to be with The Lord surrounded by his family on April 18, 2014, "Good Friday." Richard was born on December 28, 1934 in Red Sulphur Springs, WV to the late Charles W. and Ernestine L. Walker. The oldest of four children, he graduated from Garnett High School and attended West Virginia State College. While attending college, Richard met and married the love of his life, Adrian "Tinichee." From that union, two children were born, Debbie and Michael. He provided for his family by obtaining employment with Kroger Warehouse Distribution Center, where he retired with 41 years of service. An advocate for civil rights for many years, Richard participated in marches to protest segregation and other forms of discrimination. With his mother and youngest sisters, he became immersed in the Civil Rights movement and began studying the life and writings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Richard was well known in the Charleston community for his powerful renditions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speeches, where he delivered at churches and other public events, including Martin Luther King Jr.'s Holiday Celebration. Richard ignited the legacy of these renditions in many young people, including his granddaughter, Terri, who has recited at some of the places her grandfather has spoken. For over 45 years, Richard was an active member of the Washington Lodge #4 F & AM of Prince Hall Jurisdiction, where he held the esteemed positions of Worshipful Master and served as Grand Master of the State of West Virginia. Richard was a devoted Mason and believed in brotherhood. Richard was an exceptional husband, brother, father, grandfather, and uncle who dearly loved his family and we loved him back! He leaves to cherish his memories and love his beloved wife of 59 ½ years Adrian "Tinichee," his sisters, Nellie Walker, Florence Casey, and Carolyn Walker; daughter Debbie (Dana) and son Michael (Kecia): his grandsons, Michael Jr., Jermaine, Jordan, and Cequan, his only granddaughter Terri Ane', one nephew (Wayne) who he called "Casey Boy" and one niece (Traci), and his special fishing buddy, Curtis Garland (Goat). Punky will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his listening ear, his spirit to debate current issues, his ability to make people laugh with a good joke and his heart of compassion to all those he encountered. Services will be held to celebrate his life on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at noon. Viewing and family visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Washington Street West, Charleston, WV.
