Phyllis J. Carte, 99, of Elkview passed away December 23, 2023 in CAMC Memorial Division HospiceCare.

Phyllis was born August 4, 1924 in Charleston to the late Henry and Rebecca Smith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nine siblings; sons, Dennis, David and Clarence Carte; and a granddaughter, Denise Carte.

Phyllis was a homemaker and mother of five.  She loved to make people laugh and everyone who met her loved her.  She was one of a kind with her beautiful heart.  Phyllis was Jay's favorite toy, she would get down in the floor to play with him when she was in her 70's.  She would hide behind the garage to watch Jason get on and off the school bus so other kids could not see her.  As Jay got older, Jay would hide in the woods until his Momaw would leave for work then come back to the house.  This was their big secret, she never would tell on him.  She would protect him no matter what.

Left to cherish her memory are children, Thomas Carte (Barbara) of South Charleston, and Linda Birchfield (Scotty) of Elkview; grandchildren, Renea Woodfell (Rick), Bill Carte (Kim), and Melissa Birchfield; great-grandchildren, Evan Carte, Isaac and Gabe Carte, and Samantha Carte; great-grandson, Jason Rusnak, who was the light of her life; great-great-grandchildren, Abbey, Addison, Aiden, and Stormy.

Service will be at Noon Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, 1325 W. Washington Street, Charleston.  Burial will follow in the Carte Family Cemetery, Charleston.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home.
