Mildred Virginia Smith Mildred V. Smith, 94, of Charleston died July 5, 2012 at home after a long illness. She was born in Mt. Tell, Jackson County, WV, and spent most of her life in Charleston. Mrs. Smith graduated from Charleston High School and Kanawha College where she majored in art. She was a talented artist and seamstress, and was worldly in her knowledge of nature. She was an avid reader and loved bird watching. She was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she served on the Altar Guild and taught Sunday School. She was a member of Berry Hills Country Club and enjoyed golfing and playing bridge with a group of ladies that began playing cards in the 1950's. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ralph S. Smith, former dentist on the West Side of Charleston; parents, Dr. Rath and Esta Duff; sisters, Opal and Dorothea Duff; brother, Cecil Duff; and niece Helen Poe. She enjoyed traveling with her husband. They spent a lot of time in their motor home seeing West Virginia's wilds and making trips to the Outer Banks and their former camp in Smoke Hole. Their passion was hunting and fishing. Surviving are her sons, Ralph S. Smith, Jr. (Teresa) and Richard Duff Smith (Kathy) of Charleston; daughter, Rosemary L. Smith (J. Robertson) of South Charleston; grandchildren, Jason I. Smith of Asheville, North Carolina, J. Christopher Smith of Charleston, Ralph S. Smith, III of Dunbar, Heather T. Smith, of Hoboken, New Jersey, Richard D. Smith, Jr. of Parkersburg, and Patrick M. Smith of Charleston; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Marcelino, Sophia, Connor, Kate, Audrey, and Alexandra; and grand-niece, Becky Mitchell of Crested Butte, Colorado. Graveside service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 9, 2012 at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lee and Beauregard Streets, in Charleston, with the Rev. Kent Higgins officiating. Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Box 6130, Charleston, WV 25362. The family would like to thank Susan K. Dunn, companion and caregiver, for her devotion and love to our mother. Additionally, we want to thank Dr. Somes Guha for his love and wonderful medical care, and the nurses from Maxim Healthcare for their kindness and professionalism during our mother's illness.
