Manuel L. Legg, Sr. Manuel L. Legg, Sr., left this earthly body for a better world December 19, 2009. He attended Roxalana Gospel Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Wilma Harrison Legg, the mother of his six children, and Betty Sharp Legg his second wife and comforting companion in his later years. Also his parents, Winston and Victoria Legg, and five siblings, Aretta, James, Eugene, Evelyn and Mary; and a grandchild, Scottie Profitt. Manuel was dearly loved and respected by his children and their spouses, Susie and Danny Harper, Norema and Roger Profitt, Leroy and Cora Legg, Danny and Linda Legg, Debby and Mike Cherry, and Sam and Christy Legg. He has 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Manuel started working at the age of 14, and worked at many trades and retired as an electrician from the IBEW Local 466. Manuel served in the 509th Military Policy Battalion European Path with the first US Army during WWII. He served as MP Security Guard at Allied Headquarters in England, while plans were being made for the invasion of France. His tour of duty included Omaha Beach on D-Day June 6, 1944, the Battle of St. Lo, the Liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge. He was one of the few remaining survivors of the crossing of the Rhine, where he directed the first traffic across the Pontoon Bridge into the interior of Germany. For this service he received several commendations, including the bronze star. He was a charter member of the VFW Elkana Post 8129. Manuel never knew a stranger and was known for his generous spirit. He had many skills and was a good teacher, preparing not only his own children to be independent, but also prepared many others for successful employment. He died peacefully at his home after a short illness among family and under the constant vigil of granddaughter, Kimberly Higginbotham. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 22, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston with the Rev. Jim Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post No. 61, Clendenin. Friends may call from noon until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
