Kenton "Kenny" D. Powell Jr., 71, of Charleston, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at CAMC Memorial-Hospice, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on June 22, 1952, in Charleston and is preceded in death by his parents, Robert "Bobby Jack" Hartman and Bonnie Hartman; and grandson, Daniel Arthur.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Powell; children, Michael Powell (Leah), Bobby Powell (Kathy), Haley Clark (Omari); grandkids, Cameron Powell, Teygan Clark, and Sechon Clark; sisters, Debbie Canterbury (Wayne), and Shelia Carter (Shawn); brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, Bill & Marsha Rhodes, and David & Gina Rhodes; cousin, Dale Means (Mary) who was more like a brother to him; and a host of other family and friends.
Kenny received his GED and served in the Army from June 30, 1969-October 30, 1972. While in the Army, he served as a driver and tanker. After his service, he went to work for Kanawha-Charleston Housing Authority. There he spent 48 dedicated years to the Charleston-Kanawha Valley area where he started out in general maintenance and worked his way up to Director of Maintenance & Special Projects.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, traveling, taking long drives, and telling lots of stories from his past. He loved his wife, kids, grandkids, and family/friends very much.
Service will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, 1325 W Washington St., Charleston with Pastor Jeff Byrd officiating. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens, Cross Lanes.
A gathering of family and friends will begin at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kanawha Hospice Care.
