Joseph Grant Slater, Sr. Joseph Grant Slater, Sr., 84, of Charleston, went to rest October 31, 2012, to wait upon the Lords return. Joe was born to Osdell and Florence Slater on April 14, 1928. He was the oldest of 11 children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel; sons, Jody and Allen; son-in-law, Brad; dad and mother; brother, Teddy Slater; sister, Beulah Clendenin Carr, and brother-in-law, Lee Estep (Nathan). Joe served with the 20th Army Air Corp Division in WWII, with overseas duty in Guam. He was a truck driver with West Virginia Motor Delivery Company at retirement, and was a member of Teamsters Local 175. He was a Christian, serving the Lord first, at United Gospel Mission, and was Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon and bus driver. He served the Lord at Parsons Chapel Advent Christian Church with his wife, and then attended Midway Community Church. Surviving Joe are his three daughters, Susan Walker and husband, Ray of Charleston, Cheryl Elliott and husband, the Rev. Robert Elliott of Campbell's Creek, and Victoria Rhodes also of Campbell's Creek; brothers, Osdell, James and wife, Thelma, Harold and wife, Vicki; sisters, Marie, Virgie, Betty and Linda and husband, John. He was a great father, husband, and grandfather with 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was highly respected by all who knew him. He will sadly missed by his family. WE LOVE YOU DAD! Memorial Service will be 7:30 p.m., Monday, November 5, 2012 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home, Charleston, with Pastor David Crowder officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 6:00 p.m. until service time, Monday at the funeral home.
