Jean Annette Kent Higgins passed peacefully from this life to the next on Thursday, January 13, 2011, at the Genesis Healthcare facility in Marmet, West Virginia. She was 97 years old. Jean was the oldest child of Moss E. and Irene Black Kent. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Scott "Bud" Kent, and her sisters Mary Grant Kent Snyder and Patricia Moss Kent Alter, as well as by her husband, Stanley C. "Jack" Higgins, Jr. Jean and Jack's first son, Paul, died at birth in 1941. She is survived by two sons, both of Charleston: the Rev. Kent Higgins and his wife Gail, and their sons Michael Andrew Higgins and wife Jill Khoury of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Christopher Alan Higgins of Portland, Oregon; and David Kent Higgins and his wife Patti Hamilton, and his stepsons Derek, Wes, and Kyle Thomas. Jean was born in Sun, West Virginia, on October 14, 1913. Her father was a mining engineer, and the family lived in Eccles, Ethel (during the mine wars), Huntington, and Charleston before moving to Thomas. She was initially tutored at home, graduated from Logan High School in 1930, and attended Marshall College and West Virginia University. On December 20, 1938, Jean married Jack Higgins, a recent graduate of the law school at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. They initially lived in Oak Hill and moved to Fayetteville in 1948, where Jack practiced. For the 34 years of her married life, Jean was a home maker and mother. After her husband died in 1972, Jean lived on in her house in Fayetteville until her declining health required that she have regular assistance. Jean was first a resident of The Ridgemont at Edgewood Summit in Charleston, and then of the Genesis Healthcare facility in Marmet. The family thanks all those who provided care to Jean, as well as the staff of Kanawha Hospice Care who were so helpful during her last days. At her request, Jean's body will be cremated and her ashes placed in her husband's grave at Highlawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, WV. That service will take place in the spring. There will be no visitation.
