Obituary

Janet Elleen (Cavender) Clendenin, 92, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on November 4, 2023 while living at Sweetbriar Assisted Living, Dunbar.

Janet was born June 7, 1931 to the late Wilbur and Maude Cavender.  In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Kermit M. Clendenin; son, Richard W. Clendenin, whom she devoted her life to; sisters, Norma Underwood (Hobie), Nelma Petry (Emmett), and Lila Haynes (Bill); and a brother, Wilbur "Marion" Cavender Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are sisters-in-law, Sylvia Cavender, and Nan Mullins; brother-in-law, Walter Clendenin (Marlene); and several beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Although Janet had no grandchildren of her own, she claimed her great-niece, Faith Harmison, and great-nephew, Justin Underwood, as her grandchildren.  She became "Granny Janet" to them.

Janet was employed as a teenager at McCroy's 5 & 10 on Capital Street, later working at B.I. Cline Music Store, where she taught Piano.  She became a kindergarten Aid at Woodlawn-Chandler Elementary, and worked there for 20 years.  She dearly loved her kids there.
Janet had a great love for music.  At the age of 13, she started playing piano at church.  As a teenager, she started taking accordian lesson, and won awards for her talent in both.  She was a member of the Mountain Mission Church in Charleston, and played the organ there.
Our Aunt Janet was a remarkable woman.  From working on the farm like a man, building birdhouses, painting pictures and anything that needed done.  It has been an honor to call her "Granny Janet", and we loved and adored her very much.

A special thanks to Sweetbriar Assisted Living for the love and care they gave Janet.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to HospiceCare.

A celebration of life service will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the Floral Hills Garden of Memories Mausoleum Chapel, Sissonville with Rev. Tom Price officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at Noon in the Chapel.
