James Cornell Jones James Cornell Jones, 93, of Scott Depot, died April 6, 2015, at Hubbard House West, following a short illness. Cornell was born in Charleston, WV, on April 19, 1921, to the late Samuel G. Jones and Minnie Mae Jones. He was raised on Bigley Avenue and graduated from Charleston High School, with the class of 1939. Following graduation from high school, Cornell attended Trade School and worked at Charleston Ordnance Center, before joining the Army, in the 32nd Infantry Division serving in the South Pacific during WWII entering into occupied Japan. After his military service he worked for Union Carbide at the Institute plant for 32 years. He was a member of Nitro Masonic Lodge No. 170, and Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason. Cornell was a long-time member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he served at various times as deacon, trustee, and Sunday School Teacher. He had a heart and passion for missions and one of his fondest memories was a mission trip to Haiti to help build a church there. In addition to his parents, Cornell was preceded in death by his siblings, Ora Jones, Owen Jones, Ocie Surface and Callie Jones. Cornell is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Jewel E. Jones; son, Gary and his wife, Lois of Point Pleasant; grandson Adam Jones and his wife, Courtney of Winchester, Kentucky; grandson, Andrew Jones of Charleston; great-grandson, Matthew Paul Jones of Winchester, Kentucky; as well as many nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be 12 noon, Thursday, April 9, at the historical chapel at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, Hurricane, with the Rev. Ron McClung and the Rev. Lawrence Hoptry officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the sanctuary fund of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, 2150 Mt. Vernon Road, Hurricane, WV 25526 or to Hubbard House West, 4605 MacCorkle Ave., SE, South Charleston, WV 25309. The family appreciates all the compassionate care and concern from the staff at CAMC Putnam and Hubbard House West, during his time there.
