James "Leon" Cavender 96 of Charleston passed away peacefully at home August 14, 2016. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. Veteran of WWII, retired shop superintendent from Trojan Steel Company and attended Two Mile Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his wife, Orpha Cavender; infant daughter, Wanda Cavender; sisters, Melva Whaples, Esther Taylor, Pauline Cavender, Arbutus Bostic and Norma Cavender; brothers, Delmer, Ray and Herman Cavender. James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who thoroughly enjoyed time spent with his family. He was respected admired and loved by all who knew him. He was a lifetime horse enthusiast who was often seen riding on a sunny afternoon or quiet evening. Survived by children, Carol Martin and husband Art; Elmer Cavender and companion Lois Boggess; Drema Underwood and husband Floyd all of Charleston; sister Dorothy Grubb of Stone Mountain, GA. Grandchildren, Mary Snead and husband Les; Vicki Watts and husband Kevin all of South Charleston; Michael Cavender; Jeff Underwood and wife Kim all of Charleston, Kevin Underwood and wife Cathy of Hurricane; great grandchildren, Courtney Underwood, Aubrey Martin, Brittany, Bryant, Bryce, Josiah and Ayden Underwood; Leyton Watts, Ariya Snead and Morgan Watts and a host of other relatives and friends and his dogs Duke and Buddy. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Thursday August 18, 2016 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Huffman and Pastor Jody Pauley officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico with Military Graveside Rites provided by Herbert J. Thomas Detachment #947 Marine Corps. League.
