Jack Harper, 84, of Charleston, ascended to Heaven on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at CAMC Memorial Division after a sudden illness. Born and raised in Charleston, he was the son of the late Charles and Sadie (Kerns) Harper. Jack had a wonderful and fruitful life in the Charleston area. After graduating Stonewall Jackson High School in 1950, he and his wife, Lucy, met and married on October 1, 1952 and started a long and wonderful life together. Jack went on to join the US Air Force and while on Sub-watch duty, helped keep the Kanawha Valley safe from foreign intruders. Jack then began his 35 year career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He retired in 1989 and enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. Jack was a devout Christian and loved his extended family at Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Greg Harper. Survivors include his loving wife of 64 years, Lucy (Miller) Harper; daughters, Pam Harper Dodge and husband, John of Northville, MI, Sandy Harper Robinson and husband, Mike of Rocky Face, GA, and Susie Harper Smith and husband, Scott of Charleston; son, Steve Harper and Wife, Jeanne Alexander-Harper of Jacksonville, FL; eight wonderful grandchildren whom he loved with his heart and soul, Kristopher Harper, Nicholas Harper, Matt Robinson, Christy Robinson, Luke Dodge, Ryan Dodge, Zach Smith and Jacob Smith; two beautiful great-granddaughters, Zoey and Sierra Harper; and brother, Kenneth Harper and wife, Pat of Cleveland, OH. He also leaves many close friends to mourn his passing. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, April 25, 2016 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald L. Stoner officiating. Entombment will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico. The family will greet friends from 6 - 8 PM Sunday also at the church.
