Obituary

Former WV State Senator, WV State Police Superintendent, Chief of Police of Charleston Police Department and WV department of Administration Cabinet Secretary Jackie Ray "Jack" Buckalew entered Heaven's Gates Thursday March 3, 2016 in Boca Raton, Florida. He was a 4 year veteran of the United States Navy having honorably served his country during the Korean War aboard Aircraft Carrier USS Hornet of the 7th fleet. He was a member of South Charleston Masonic Lodge #168 AF & AM, Charleston Scottish Rite Bodies, York Rite Bodies, Beni Kedem Shrine, Flying Fezzes, Royal Order of Jesters Court #111 and was a Kentucky Colonel. He assisted in transporting ill children to Shriners Children's Hospital. He served on the Board of Director of the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries. The Senator was appointed to the Ethics Commission by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. He was a graduate of Ripley High School Class of 1950 and received his BS in Criminal Justice from Morris Harvey College (UC) and his MS in Safety Education from Marshall University. Senator Buckalew established the 911 Metro Call Center as well as Safety City. He taught at Northwestern University in Illinois and Marshall University. He traveled to Saudi Arabia in assisting them in establishing a law enforcement training academy. Through his efforts funding was achieved which resulted in the building of the WV State Police Academy and firing range in Institute, WV. Throughout his life he was dedicated to the men and women in law enforcement. He was predeceased by his wife Eula and siblings Loci, Floyd, Marshall, Harry, Inez and great grandson Joshua Kenneth Hackworth. Born in Charleston on November 11, 1932, he was the last sibling of Floyd and Dorothy Buckalew. Left to mourn his passing are sons Robert and wife Kelley Buckalew, Ken Buckalew, grandson Robert Marshall Buckalew. Granddaughters, Beth & Ken Hackworth, Laura Wilson and fianc'e John Garten, LaRayne & Travis Newhouse. Great grandchildren Ty and Chase Newhouse. Longtime friends Bob & Pat Stanley, Companion Ruth Bernstein, as well as a host of countless friends. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday March 12 2016 at Emmanuel Baptist Church 1401 Washington St. W. Charleston, WV with WV State Police Chaplain Jim Mitchell officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 2:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday also at the church. "Those who are attending the visitation and services please use the 7th Avenue entrance to the church." Entombment will follow at Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico, WV with State Police Honors and Masonic Graveside Rites. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Beni Kedem Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 2589, Charleston, WV 25329.
