Hugh Samuel Stewart of Hansford, formerly of Charleston, WV age 85 passed away Thursday March 19th after a short illness. He was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina in 1929. He attended Mars Hill College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A Korean War Veteran, Hugh served in the United States Army, 3rd Infantry Division, 65th Engineer Battalion as a sergeant, was attached to the Turkish Brigade and received the Bronze Star. He was later stationed on the Big Island of Hawaii where he met Leonette Ignacio, his wife of 55 years. Hugh spent over 25 years in the construction industry as a superintendant and project manager for Wright Contracting Company. He worked on projects in Morocco, The Azores, Iran, Nicaragua, Afghanistan and at least nine states. He later served as Vice President of Princess Susan Coal Company and General Manager of Cedar Coal, Central Appalachian Coal and Southern Appalachian Coal Companies. After retirement from American Electric Power he and Leonette traveled frequently to Hawaii and he remained active in the coal industry employeed by Ford Coal Company until his death. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents Zebulon Vance and Roxie Mathews Stewart, his wife Leonette, and brother Grant Mathews Stewart. He is survived by his brother Zebulon Vance Stewart, Jr, daughter Lisa of Charlotte, NC, and three sons, Scott of St. Louis, MO., Shawn of Tallahassee, FL. and James Vance of Albany, OH., and seven grandchildren. He lived a remarkable life, left an indelible impression on all of us and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He will be interred at The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii.
