Obituary

Helen Starr Fisher, age 71, and longtime resident of Sissonville, West Virginia, passed away on Friday, July 18th, 2025, in Cleveland Clinic Hospital.  She was born on January 29th, 1954, in Logan, WV, to parents Bert and Eva Starr, and as a child grew up in Mingo, WV, with her three sisters (Linda, Alice, and Eliza) and two brothers (Ike and Otis).  She left school as a teenager but received her GED as an adult.

She married the late Thomas (Tom) Arthur Fisher in July 1980, and together they raised four children: Kristie Starr, Tonya, Connie, and Jason.  Helen was a devoted mother and grandmother, and her time was mainly spent being the full-time caretaker for Kristie Starr.  She also worked as a local babysitter for neighbors; and once Jason was in preschool, Helen worked in Kanawha County Schools as a school cook, which is absolutely enjoyed and told stories about the young students who loved her charm and holiday attire.

Helen was equally loved by many adults and children.  She had many friends who became her "village" in Sissonville and she enjoyed time with neighbors.  She was an active member of the community, volunteering in her children's school and activities and attending all home games and school functions as she could with Kristie by her side.

Helen loved all holidays and had a special tradition for each of them.  She decorated the home for the holidays and especially loved cooking special foods for holidays.  We will always remember her Thanksgiving dressing, broccoli casserole, and cornflake chews.  Helen was also a very big gift giver.  She showered her children and grandchildren with gifts for Christmas, so much that it almost couldn't fit in their cars to go home.  She would have given anyone anything she had if asked of her, yet herself lived modestly.

In November 2019, Helen became a double-lung transplant recipient at Cleveland Clinic.  Tom was devoted and by her side, and she had a hard time recovering and wasn't able to return home to Sissonville until March 2020. She continued to struggle at times, in and out of hospitals, started kidney dialysis in 2021, and suffered from heart issues.  During her continued recovery, she suddenly lost her daughter, Connie, in 2020, and Tom in November 2021. In 2023, it was decided that Kristie should be moved in with siblings, and Helen should focus full time on her therapy, and she moved to Brookdale Charleston Gardens Assisted Living facility.

At Brookdale, Helen continued to make loving connections with other residents and staff and found simple ways to serve them.  She would brag on how well they took care of her there and made her feel important -- she was one of their Ambassadors.  Helen enjoyed playing Bingo, going shopping on Fridays, and doing puzzles in her free time.  She had many doctor appointments and kept a hopeful outlook on her declining health while experiencing frequent hospital stays.  She loved time with family and that is really why she kept fighting -- for more time with those she loved so dearly.

Helen is survived by daughter Kristie Starr of Jefferson; Tonya (Brent) Criser of Winfield; and son Jason (Sarah) Fisher of Sissonville; grandchildren --  Carly (Ethan) Hatfield of Beckley; Adam, Jayna and Shelby Criser of Winfield; Aiden and Peyton Painter, Cody and Thomas Dale Fisher, and Jocelyn Berry of Sissonville; and many nieces and nephews from the Starr family whom she cherished like her own children and kept close relationships.  She is also survived by many Fisher nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and father-in-law Arthur Fisher. She absolutely loved her phone calls with Mr. Fisher as she lovingly referred to him.
