George Stephen Shelhammer, 58 of Charleston, previously of Clarksburg, the third son of the late Tom Shelhammer and Yolanda Fazzini Shelhammer, went to live with his Lord and Savior on Sunday August 17, 2014 at home following a long fight with multiple medical problems. George attended Christian Assembly Church in Clarksburg with his family and remained a member of that church. George was educated in the public school system in Clarksburg. He attended Fairmont State College, where he majored in political science and history. He served as President of the Fairmont State College Political Association. George found his calling in the political arena. In his early twenties he was selected to serve an internship with then Attorney General Charlie Brown. Forging a lifetime friendship, George played an integral part in Charlie Brown's successful election and re-election as West Virginia Attorney General. George served in many advisory and administration positions under Attorney General Brown. After this, George worked briefly as an employer representative with the Bureau of Employment Programs, where he worked with local businesses and employers to provide a trained and qualified workforce. In 1995, he was selected for a position by the present West Virginia State Auditor and Congressional Candidate Glen Gainer, where he served as senior advisor to Auditor Gainer until his retirement in 2012. George also served as legislative liaison, ombudsman, and longtime best friend. George served on many committees and advisory groups for the Democratic Party. He was a close friend and supporter of the late Senator Pro Tem, Bill Sharpe. In addition, George served as the president of the local AFL-CIO, was a member of the Funeral Directors' Association, and associated with Bernard J. Folio, Inc., and continued his association and friendship with the Folio children after Mr. Folio's passing. In addition to his mother, whom he adored, George is survived by his beloved wife, friend, and love of his life, Shirley Shelhammer of Charleston. George was honored to help raise their five children and in the end to be looked upon by their children as their father. Together George and Shirley had the great joy of parenthood and being blessed with seven grandchildren. He is survived by five children and their families, Stephanie and husband Bart and their children Eric, Rebecca and Taylor, Sheri and husband David, and their son, Michael of Charlotte, N.C., Stacy and husband Chuck and their children, Brendon, Caylee and Brock of Cape Coral, FL., Scott of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Shaun and wife Lynsey of Tucson, Ariz. George is also survived by three brothers and their wives, Paul and Kathy of New Castle, PA., John Shelhammer of Clarksburg, and Mark and Carol Shelhammer of West Virginia; special nephews, John Paul and David; special niece, Stephanie Shelhammer; and many many uncles, aunts, and other family members . George was a wonderful and caring man who will be greatly missed by family and friends. A private memorial will be held by the family at a later date.
