Emery D. Harriston, 92, of Charleston, passed away on April 23, 2016 at Quarry Manor. Mr. Harriston was a veteran of the US Navy serving in the Philippine Liberation during WWII. He also attended First Baptist Church, was a graduate of West Virginia State University and was a past member of the Washington Lodge #4 F&AM of Prince Hall Jurisdiction. Mr. Harriston was a retired Job Counselor for the WVDHHR. Emery also worked as Neighborhood Assistance Officer out of the Roosevelt Station and was a former insurance salesman. Additionally, he catered many events for governors Rockefeller, Moore, Caperton and Underwood and was an Usher at Power Park where he was affectionately known as "Happy." Mr. Harriston was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie; daughter, Mary Thompson; and parents, Jack and Louise (Tinsley) Harriston. He is survived by his loving son, Emery D. Harriston, Jr. of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Renee Thompson, Azel Thompson and April Thompson; and several great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2016 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. James Ealy officiating. Burial with military honors provided by American Legion Post 61, Clendenin, will follow at Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home.
