Earl William "Sonny" Smith, Jr., of Indiana Avenue, Charleston, died Monday, March 22, 2010, after an extended Illness. He was 71. A native of Hagerstown, Maryland, Mr. Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl William Smith, Sr. He was a retired truck driver with Chemical Lehman Tank Lines and was a loving husband and father. He was a member of the Teamsters Local No. 175 for 20 years and served as the Shop Stewart for the organization. He was a bowler with the National Association of Amateur Bowlers, winning a local tournament in 1990 and going to the national tournament in Las Vegas, where he finished in second place. Mr. Smith was a member of West Charleston Baptist Church, where he cooked the weekly community meals on Wednesday nights for several years. Over the past 10 years, he also cooked for Kairos Community weekends at Mount Olive Prison near Montgomery WV, World Changers in Charleston as well as several other special events in the church and community. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Smith Sr. and a daughter, Earlene Renee Smith. Survivors included: his wife of 46 years, Anita Louise Smith of the home; four sons, Darrell Edward Smith and his wife Lisa, of Olympia, Washington; Dwayne Allen Smith of Dunbar; Earl "Sonny" Smith III and his wife, Sharon, of St. Albans, WV; Timothy Lee Smith of Charles; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Smith-Guthrie and her husband, Jamie, of South Charleston, WV; his mother, Mary Jane Smith of Hagerstown, Maryland, four brothers, Greg Smith and his wife, Debbie; Gary Smith and Brian Smith all of Hagerstown, Maryland and Ronald Smith of Fairfield, Pennsylvania; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, March 25, 2010, at 6 p.m. at West Charleston Baptist Church, 1410 Fourth Avenue, Charleston, with the Rev. Norman Cannada officiating.
