Donald Carlyle Bowles Surrounded by his family singing "I'll Fly Away," Donald Carlyle Bowles, 85, of Charleston, was carried to the arms of Jesus on October 11, 2011. Born November 30, 1925, Donald would no doubt characterize the first 23 years of his life as including many unwise choices. However, after six years as a United States Marine in the Asiatic Pacific and China campaigns of World War II, Donald returned home and met the two great loves of his life - his wife, Mary Anna Fisher, and his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thereafter, his life was one of complete devotion to both. Donald "earned his pennies" at FMC in South Charleston. At 56, he retired and gave 15 years of service to the Mountain Mission Social Services. His second retirement included driving veterans to the Huntington VA Hospital several times a week. He was unwavering in his love of and service to his church and church family. He served faithfully and offered his kind assistance whenever and wherever needed. As a father and husband, Donald provided for his family, not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as well. Donald had no "hobbies." His sweet Mary Anna and his girls were his focus. He was present for them. Donald also offered his generous spirit to extended family, friends, and anyone who needed help or a loving prayer. Donald did not seek status or recognition but easily earned the respect of everyone who knew him. His consistent life of quiet integrity impacted many lives and exemplified what God can achieve with a heart wholly devoted to Him. Donald's legacy includes three daughters, two sons-in-law, three grand sons-in-law, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren: Joanna Bowles, Joe and Carla Cole, Tim and Cheryl DiPiero, James Vickers, Brian and Stashah Korn, Brian and Darian Parsons, Dairen and Kiele Givens, Ashley and Hillary Cole, Danielle, Joseph and Luca DiPiero, Taelor, Avery, Greyson, Lachlan, Stratton and Thayer Korn, Ayden, Emerson and Holden Parsons, and Porter Givens. Donald is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Hagler and Phyllis Bush Stump. A Celebration of Donald's life will be 1:00 pm Saturday, October 15, 2011, at the Charleston Mountain Mission. Burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Friends may call at the church on Friday, October 14, 2011, from 5 until 8 pm.
