Obituary

Catherine "Kay" Layne Fugere, 90, of Charleston, died Monday, May 5, 2014 at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Kay was a proud veteran serving in the WAC during WWII. During her long working career, Kay worked at Kanawha County Courthouse, WV State Department of Highways and Senior Citizens Complexes in Florida. Kay was actively involved with the Democratic headquarters in WV and served on President John F. Kennedy's campaign in 1960 and was invited to his Inauguration and Inauguration Ball in 1961. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters for 12 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bridget Williams; stepmother, Goldie Williams; her late husband, "Potty" Layne; brother, Buddy Williams; sister, Toni Thaxton; son-in-law, Bobby Fleshman; and granddaughter, Kelly Layne. Survivors include her loving daughters, Lee Layne and husband, Eric Daniels, Katy Layne, Betsy Fleshman and Beverly Zable and husband, Bob; sons, Mike Layne and Larry Layne and wife, Gayle; grandchildren, Robert Layne and wife, Christy, Scott Fleshman and wife, Jackie, Brandi Eckert and husband Terry, Brian Layne and Shanon Daniels and wife, Heather; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews. The family would also like to give special thanks to her long time caregivers, Reggina Gillespie and Miss Gracie. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 9:00 AM Friday, May 9, 2014 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Kurtz as celebrant. Inurnment with military rites will follow at Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar. A memorial gathering will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Kay's name are requested to: Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter, 1601 2nd Ave., Charleston, WV 25387, Kanawha Hospice Care, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25387 or St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 1000 6th St., Charleston, WV 25302.
