Betsy Ann Lewis Betsy Ann Burford Lewis peacefully departed this life to be with her Lord on June 30, 2014. She was at the home of her daughter, Jeanne, who was by her side. Mom was preceded in death by our father, her husband of 42 years, Shirley E. Lewis; her parents, Costello Howard and Thelma Burford (Francisco); sister, Mary Burford Bragg; and brothers, Howard, Kenneth and Jackie Burford. She was born in Tyler Mountain in 1932 and graduated from Dunbar High School. She married her first real love at the age of 17 and became a mother of five children. She was a homemaker until all the children were in school, and then enrolled in Garnet Career Center where she graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. After leaving Charleston to move with her husband to Portland, Tennessee, she worked as an office manager in a physician's office. In Tennessee, she became a member of the Tri-County Baptist Church in White House. Later, Dad's job moved them to Strausstown, Pennsylvania. She returned to Charleston after dad passed away suddenly at the young age of 62 and returned to Sugar Creek Church where she was a member until her death. Mom committed her life to Jesus at the age of 12 and became a member of McKinnon Presbyterian Church in Tyler Mountain. She loved McKinnon church and was very active in various youth groups. Later, she joined Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church where her husband served as a Deacon. Mom, Dad and our Aunt Carolyn sang together as the Lewis Trio for several years, mostly singing at their home church. Mom was devoted to raise all of us to serve the Lord, and she was quite the homemaker. She was a great cook, even though she never enjoyed it. She also was an accomplished seamstress and knitter, making numerous outfits for us when we were young. She had a special gift taking care of babies, and her most rewarding years as a nurse were spent in the newborn intensive care unit at CAMC. Mom is survived by her children, Vernon "Tony" (wife, Debra) of Sissonville, Randy Lewis (wife, Terri) of Smithfield, Kentucky, Jeanne Tolliver (husband, Randy) of Sissonville, Kimberly Lewis of Charleston and Timothy Lewis of Sissonville. In addition to her children, she is survived by four grandsons, Devin Tolliver, Jordan Tolliver, Chad Lewis and Collen Lewis; four granddaughters, Erica Hughart (husband, Chadd), Whitney Ferrell (husband, Justin), Chelsea Lewis, Catherine Lewis and Amberlea Perks; two great-grandchildren: Ethan Hughart and Norah Ferrell; brothers, Jerry Burford of Gainesville, FL, and Larry Burford of Cumming, GA; and several beloved nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her faithful, life-long best friend, Betty Jo Payne. Her faithful dog, Winston, was also her constant, loyal companion. A celebration of mom's life will be held at the Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1648 Sugar Creek Drive, Charleston, at 11:00am on Friday, July 4, followed by lunch for family and friends at the church annex building. Burial will be at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. In lieu of flowers, mom would have been pleased with a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital; Insight for Living, the ministry of Charles Swindoll; or the Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, 1648 Sugar Creek Drive, Charleston. The family is so grateful for the constant love and prayers of our dear friends and church families. We also thank God for Mrs. Patty Thurman who loved mom and helped us so much as we cared for her. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life...nor things present, nor things to come...shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord
