Archie Eldon Mullin 89 of Charleston passed away Thursday August 30, 2012 at Hubbard Hospice House. Archie was born on Morris Creek, near Clendenin, on January 12, 1923. He was the son of the late Virgie Mullins Carroll. Archie graduated from Clendenin High School and attended Morris Harvey College. Following school, Archie worked in the shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia and quit to serve his country with the U.S. Navy during World War II. Later, he began a career in chemical operations for Union Carbide Corporation where he retired after 38 years of service. Archie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen Blessing Mullins; two nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Madlyn Walker and brother, L. Roy Mullins. Archie was a Christian and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for 61 years, serving as a church deacon for many years. Outside of his job and church work, Archie, in his fifties, became an avid long distance runner. He ran his first of many Charleston Distance runs in 1977 at the age of 54 and continued running until he became the winner in his age group. He culminated his running career with a national ranking in the over-sixty age group and a great performance in the Boston Marathon. Archie continued running well into his seventies. Archie was a huge fan of West Virginia University football and basketball. He was very much looking forward to the 2012 games in the Big 12. We can only hope that he will have a great seat for the games looking down from heaven. Most importantly, everyone who knew Archie will remember him as a very good, kind and soft-spoken man who always had a story to tell and never spoke a harsh or negative word about others. The family would like to thank the many kind, caring and generous people at Hubbard Hospice who made Archie's last days very peaceful and comfortable. Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday September 4, 2012 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald L. Stoner officiating. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery, Charleston. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to services also in Tuesday.
