Alvin Uriah Martin, 91, of Big Tyler, known too many as AL, went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 22, 2012. Born January 8, 1921 to Thayer and Eliza Edens Martin, he was the youngest of 5 boys. Alvin retired from the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant, where he was a pilot in WWII. After serving our Country, he worked at DuPont, Gulf Oil, Greyhound and finally working as one of the Kanawha Valley's best backhoe operators. He was a member of South Charleston Masonic Lodge #168, former member of Charleston Scottish Rite, York Rite and Beni Kedem. With the Shrine he was a member of Legion of Honor and volunteered as a driver to transport children to and from Cincinnati and Lexington, KY Hospitals. Preceding him in death were his mother and father; brothers, Erskine, Albert, Francis, and Ivan; grandson, Bryan Martin. Surviving are children, Annette Wolfe of Charleston; Nancy Toppings of St. Albans; Elaine Fierbaugh and husband Dave of Charleston; Brenda Gentry and husband Steve of Kannapolis, NC; Brooks Martin and wife Tryna of Charleston and Tom Martin of Wasilla, Alaska. 14 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren and many Nieces and Nephews. In Lieu of flowers the family suggests Memorial Donations to; Beni Kedem Transportation Department, 100 Quarrier Street, Charleston, WV 25301. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday April 26, 2012 at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Minnerly officiating. Burial with Military Graveside Rites provided by American Legion Post 61 Clendenin will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
